The Collaborator
The organization convenes partners to identify community needs and collaborates on shared policy concerns. It aligns itself strategically with other organizations locally or at the state level, funds policy work or informs legislation, and may have a dedicated staff person working on policy and advocacy issues.
Tactics
- Convene community members, grantees, and policymakers to hear about the community’s policy concerns and hear from a range of voices on solutions, identify shared policy priorities.
- Hire or assign a senior staff member charged with incorporating public policy strategies into the foundation’s broader community impact work.
- Join or lead pooled funds for supporting policy research, education campaigns and advocacy for shared policy priorities.
- Fund organizations to do specific aspects of advocacy and policy development, such as: Research (to identify the problems and solutions), Communications (to establish the narrative and get the word out, Infrastructure (to build capacity among core partners), and Community Organizing (to elevate the voices of those most impacted and build power).
