The Explorer

Your organization is interested in policy and advocacy but has not yet explored all your options. There are no operational plans or investments in public policy work currently in place.

Tactics

  • Organizational leadership and your board should work collaboratively to learn about policy change work for your specific type of foundation-its legal limits and best practices. (Private foundations should read this primer; public foundations should read this primer.)
  • Talk with other foundation leaders engaged in varying policy work. FPN can connect you.
  • Engage with FPN, Florida Policy Institute, Florida Nonprofit Alliance, CFLeads, and Bolder Advocacy to learn about best practices to educate, advocate and sometimes lobby policymakers and educate or mobilize the general public, or fund nonprofits who do so.
  • Learn more about where your stakeholders are in terms of their perspective on policy engagement, and how they view your organization’s role. Survey your board, staff, and grantees about their policy goals (if any), and interest in engaging in mission-aligned public policy work.

Next Steps to Consider

  1. Have a conversation with your board about the importance of integrating policy/advocacy approaches
  2. Learn about what is and is not allowed in funding policy/advocacy as a foundation
  3. Talk to your grantees about their policy/advocacy efforts and needs
